In the past, I published a long guide on German-speaking Switzerland.
Today, we focus on the Italian and the French part.
This is where you'll get the most sun, the best bangs for your bucks and, oftentimes, the best lifestyle.
This guide took me a lot of time to make.
I hope you'll find it valuable!
1. Vibes and people
Winner: tie / subjective.
Lugano more Mediterranean and Italian-fancy.

Sion more medieval, mountainous and small town French. Valais is vineyard-maxxed.

Sion people are down-to-earth, proud and traditional, love sports, nature, food and wine.
Lugano is a mix of Italian fancy lakeside Dolce Vita, German retirees and mountain Swiss vibes.
In short:
Lugano:
• Mediterranean / Sophisticated
• Palms & Camellias
Sion:
• Alpine / Rustic-Chic
• Vineyards & Glaciers
2. City size
Winner: Lugano / subjective.
• 60k people in Lugano
• 35k in Sion.
There's more to do in Lugano city than Sion city.

People in Sion think more in terms of Valais than in terms of Sion: sports, food and close knit community life in Valais nature and in the Rhone valley.

People in Lugano think more in terms of Lugano daily life + Milan weekends + Ticino nature + Zurich careers.
Some people will prefer Sion because it has less traffic, noise and it's less chaotic.
But given that we're talking about 2 small cities, majority will prefer Lugano's size as it offers a bit more.
3. Urbanism and landscapes
Winner: tie / subjective.
Lake life:
• Lugano and surrounding area is by the lake
• Sion: 40m to lake Leman, 15m by bike to another little lake

Lac Leman IMO is better than Lugano Lake: cleaner and bigger. Although Lugano lake is warmer.
Lugano lake sometimes has "blue-green algae" which can be toxic.
Moving around:
• A car is convenient in both places
• Both are walkable, but Lugano has more cars and traffic, especially in summer
• Sion is more flat than Lugano, and you can bike around (Lugano is Lisbon-level city hikes).
Landscapes:
• Sion/Valais: mountains, valleys, vineyards
• Lugano/Ticino: 'tropical', lush and Mediterranean

4. Location
Winner: tie / subjective.
Lugano:
• 45 minutes to Lake Como
• 1h-1h30m to Milan city
• 1h30m to Milan airport by train
• 2h to Zurich
• 3h to the seaside in Liguria
• 3h30m train to Florence
• 4h10m train to Venice
• 5h to the Adriatic coast
• 6h20m to Paris

Sion:
• 1h to Lausanne
• 1h30m to Chamonix, France
• 1h45m by car to Annecy (3h30m by train)
• 2h to Geneva and Geneva airport
• 2h40m to Milan (direct train)
• 2h45m to Lyon
• 3h to Zurich
• 3h15m to Dijon / Burgundy
• 5h40m to Paris
• Adriatic, Liguria: 1h30m more than from Lugano

Sion better for skiing:
• 30 minutes from Verbier, Crans-Montana, Nendaz
But Lugano also OK:
• 1h to Airolo, 1h15m to Andermatt, 1h45m to Flims
For hiking:
• Sion: higher peaks, 'bisses'
• Lugano: mild and Mediterranean
• They both offer a variety of options
Sion Airport:
• Small and seasonal airport, mostly just summer
• Some of the best beach destinations in Europe
• 1h10m to Calvi and 1h30m to Figari (Corsica)
• 1h15m to Isola d'Elba
• 1h10m-1h30m to Saint-Tropez
• 1h30m to Palma de Mallorca
• 1h40m to Alghero, Sardinia
• One downside is that flights get expensive: 800 CHF for a round trip is not uncommon; moreover, it’s small planes flying in/to a mountainous terrain
5. Opportunities for your kids' future
Winner: Sion.
Sion:
• Plugs into French Switzerland: Valais, Lausanne, Geneva
• Same language, "same Switzerland"
• Geneva/Lausanne area has elite opportunities: commodity trading, diplomacy, medtech, EPFL
Lugano:
• Ticino has much less opportunities than German and French Switzerland
• 2h from Zurich, but not "same Switzerland" (language and 'Alpine' barrier)
• Close to Milan/Lombardy: dubious value (among the areas with most brain drain in Europe)
Screenshots below from RemoteGOATs Relocation Advisor on Sion/Romandie career optionality (for family and kids).

Even if your kids won't work in any of the sectors that favour Romandie over Ticino, French-speaking Paris will easily beat Milan in media, fashion and more.
Gastronomy is strong in both Ticino and Romandie.
If you choose Lugano but want whole Switzerland opportunities for your kids: have them learn German/French.
It's fairly common among Ticinesi kids.
6. Weather
Winner: tie / subjective.
Tl;dr:
• Lugano is more rainy
• Same sunshine hours
• Lugano has warmer winters
• Sion is dry with some warm wind
• Lugano is humid and lush, with more mosquitos
• Summer: Lugano gets humid and hot, Sion hot too but more "Alpine crisp"
Rainfall Data:
• Significantly less rain in Sion
• For full data, see first table image below
Sunshine Data:
• 2,170 hours (6h daily avg) in Sion
• 2,230 hours (6.1h daily avg) in Lugano
• It also depends which source you check: some say Sion has more sunshine
• All in all, very similar total sunshine: Lugano has more sunny winters, Sion more sunny springs/autumns
7. Local economy and people
Winner: tie / subjective.
Economy:
• Sion: public admin (capital of Valais), healthcare (orthopedics excellence), health-tech/biotech (Lausanne/Vaud spillover), vineyards (world class biodynamic producers).
• Lugano: Switzerland's 3rd largest financial centre, tourism, pharma/life sciences, crypto & blockchain.
Locals:
• Sion: friendly, especially if you learn the language, but more reserved
• Lugano: more tourists, locals are friendly and open, probably more than in Sion/Valais
Family-friendliness:
• Both are family friendly
• Sion has more young people and families, and it's one of the Swiss cantons where families are most supported (more on this later)
• Lugano also has many families but also many retirees
Dubai/Crypto bros influx:
• Lugano: high
• Sion: low, but also less "modern/international"
8. Cost of Living (excluding rent)
Winner: tie.
Food and restaurants: similar, depending on item. Maybe slightly cheaper in Lugano.
Services / labour: a bit cheaper in Lugano. Workers who commute daily from Italy help keep service cost below avg CH levels.
In Lugano can also buy things and do shopping in Italy.
The "state"/canton gives you more money for your kids in Sion than in Lugano:
Childcare allowances:
• 300-500 CHF/month per kid in Sion/Valais
• 230-280 CHF/mo per kid in Lugano/Ticino
Difference is 800-2.5k CHF/yr per kid, or 1.5-5k CHF/yr with 2 kids.
Money given at kid's birth (if I understood correctly):
• Sion: ~2k CHF
• Lugano: 0 CHF
Daycare:
• Depends on income in both places
• Generally cheaper in Sion (can save 5-10k CHF/yr per kid, if you use it)
Daycare Federal Allowance (UKibeG):
• Not Sion/Lugano specific (but worth mentioning)
• Valid from 2025/2026 everywhere in CH
• CHF 100 per month for every day a child spends in a daycare per week
• e.g., if the child goes 5 days, you get CHF 500/month
9. Housing
Winner: Lugano.
AI says: "Lugano is generally 15–25% more expensive than Sion for equivalent apartments".
While this might be true as a general rule, in practice it's not quite like that.
Rent in Sion might be "lower" (in theory), but the supply of empty apartments is way higher in Lugano.
This means that it's easier to find good deals there than in Sion.
In practice, if you're looking for a modern apartment, and want things to go like this:
• Go to housing marketplaces
• Send a few messages, visit some flats/houses
• Close the deal with a good price
It's gonna be easier in Lugano than in Sion.
You will also probably end up with similar prices, and potentially newer buildings in Lugano.
See screenshots below on the reasons behind this oversupply of housing in Lugano, and why it's not like that in Sion.
10. Bonus: Cinematographic Vibe Test
Winner: tie / subjective.
If you like movies, you can get an intuition of a city's personality by having AI match it with movies you like.
I tried it with some directors I like.
AI said that Sion goes more in the direction of Herzog and Sergio Leone:
• Traditional
• Big spaces
• Man vs nature
• Dry, sunny, rocky
• Silence, solitude, reflection, depth
And paired Lugano with intellectual and stylish Dino Risi, Sorrentino, Antonioni or Godard:
• Wealthy, well-dressed, "Italian-but-organized"
• Nearby Milan and Liguria for more intense Italian vibes
But, to be fair:
• Ticino also has amazing nature if you want that mountainous, quiet lifestyle
• Sion plugs into France (proximity + language), Milan (2h40m) and Paris for more sophistication, as well as Corsica, Sardinia and French Riviera via Sion airport
So there you have it!
Which one did seem more promising to you? :)
Where would you recommend me to move to and set up base? 😁
